Get connected with a 5g sim card on arrival in Vietnam

Where can you find a SIM card in Vietnam?

4G SIM Providers

5G SIM providers

In Vietnam, you have several options to easily obtain a SIM card.

5G high speed SIM cards are available in big cities, and fast 4G SIM cards can be used in most rural areas.

Viettel is the operator with the most range of network stations throughout the whole country.

Reports state that Vinaphone is the fastest and least latent provider in big cities.

So, how do you get a SIM card in Vietnam?

Airports:

Upon arrival at major international airports like Noi Bai (Hanoi), Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City), or Da Nang International Airport, you'll find dedicated counters of local network operators offering tourist SIM cards. This is the most convenient option for many travelers.

Mobile Network Operator Stores:

Throughout Vietnam, especially in major cities and tourist areas like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hoi An, you'll find numerous stores of the main network operators (Viettel, Vinaphone, Mobifone, and Vietnamobile). Visit these stores to choose from various data plans and purchase a SIM card.

Sometimes, small stores along the streets will say "SIM Card". They might only sell SIM card credit scratch off cards that give you codes to enter like so: *101*CODE#.

Convenience Stores and Mobile Phone Shops:

Many convenience stores, supermarkets, and mobile phone shops across the country also sell SIM cards. Keep an eye out for signs advertising SIM cards from different providers.

Street Vendors:

In tourist areas, you might come across street vendors selling SIM cards. While convenient, it's advisable to choose authorized sellers to avoid scams or unregistered SIMs.

Online:

Some network operators offer the option to purchase eSIMs online before your trip. This can be a convenient option, but remember that you'll need an eSIM-compatible device.

One such service that definitely works, and has competitive pricing compared to the local networks is Airalo. This kind of SIM has plans that give 4G and 5G but not necessarily local calling.

Receive texts and calls at home on a private number

Did you know it is possible to get a phone number from many countries without physically being in that country?

Let's say you wanted your bank or government messages and other SMS codes to reach you while you are out of the country.

Tello is a good solution that costs $5/month plus tax for their lowest plan of 100 minutes and FREE texting.

Get $10 for FREE if you sign up for a Tello account.

Trust me, it works.

Tips for Buying a SIM Card:

Bring Your Passport:

You'll need your passport to register and activate your SIM card.

Choose the Right Plan:

Consider your data needs and the length of your stay to select the most suitable data plan.

Ask for Help:

If you're unsure about the process or need assistance setting up your SIM card, don't hesitate to ask the staff at the store or counter. They are usually happy to help.

In airports, currency and SIM cards tend to be over priced, unless there's a really good deal like a free SIM.

As you exit the baggage hall, you can easily find SIM cards at the Airports or once you get into town you can visit stores of the major network operators in the city center.

Viettel is a popular choice among foreigners due to its extensive 4G network coverage.

Wi-Fi is everywhere in Vietnam, and it's always for free! Every cafe and every building will have a strong Wi-Fi connection that you can ask to use. The codes or passwords are most often as simple as 0123456789.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
